Gaius Julius Caesar, who ruled Rome as a dictator from 49 BC until his assassination in 44 BC, is thought to have suffered from epilepsy. Caesar had at least four bouts of complex partial (focal) seizures in his lifetime, twice on military campaigns. Suetonius and Plutarch, writing after Caesar’s death, said that Caesar suffered from “fits” or “attacks” that could be attributed to epileptic seizures. While epileptic seizures can be significant in their impact, this health issue did not prevent Julius Caesar from achieving some of the highest honors of his times.
Other evidence indicates that Caesar suffered from cerebrovascular disease. Because Caesar died so long ago, we will never be certain.
There are approximately 1.2 million people in the United States living with epilepsy. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by abnormal neuronal activity that manifests in seizures, unusual behavior, and lack of awareness of one’s surroundings. Epilepsy can be caused by a head injury, stroke, brain tumor, genetic or immunological factors, or an infection within the brain such as meningitis or encephalitis. Epilepsy also may have an unknown cause and so therefore is idiopathic. Epilepsy is usually diagnosed by performing an electroencephalogram, or EEG. Treatment of epilepsy usually involves anti-epileptic drugs that either decrease neuronal excitation or increase neuronal inhibition. For drug-resistant epilepsy, surgery and/or diet (such as the ketogenic diet) can be further treatment options. If seizures go uncontrolled, status epilepticus (seizures that last longer than 5 minutes), injury, or even death, can occur. This fatal outcome is termed sudden unexplained death for someone with epilepsy, or SUDEP.
